How is this calculated?

The formula weights your existing grade with the non-final portion, then solves for the final score you need:

needed = (target − current × (1 − weight/100)) ÷ (weight/100)

For example: if you have 78%, want 85%, and the final is worth 30%:

needed = (85 − 78 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (85 − 54.6) ÷ 0.30 = 101.3%

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need on my final to pass?

Enter your current grade, your target grade (e.g., 70% to pass), and the weight of your final exam. The calculator instantly tells you the exact score you need.

How is a final grade calculated?

Final grades are typically calculated as: Final Grade = (Current Grade × (1 - Final Weight)) + (Final Exam Score × Final Weight). For example, if your current grade is 80%, your final is worth 30%, and you score 90%, your final grade is 83%.

What if I need more than 100% on my final?

If the calculator shows you need more than 100%, the target grade is not mathematically achievable with exam performance alone. Focus on extra credit opportunities or discuss options with your instructor.

How much does the final exam affect my grade?

It depends on your course syllabus. Finals typically count for 20-40% of the final grade. Enter your specific final exam weight for an accurate calculation.

Can I use this calculator for multiple classes?

Yes — simply enter the values for each class separately. The calculator resets when you enter new numbers.
